River Road Coffeehouse will be featuring digital photography by David Luke Kurtz and digital art by Shell Franklin at its original Granville location from October 16, through November 27, 2011. Located in the Shops at Seven Pines on River Road adjacent to State Route 16, River Road Coffeehouse is proud to showcase local artists through displays throughout the shop.

David Luke Kurtz grew up in York Beach, Maine, which is located on the southern seacoast and is blessed with all four seasons. Part of Dave’s vision in his art comes from his early years as a child. As he grew up he became interested in history and how art played a roll. In his college years he was able to explore Boston, Massachusetts, and got to learn about the rich history at the Museum of Fine Arts. At this point he was still working with clay and grease pencil. He took time off until after the year 2008 when he picked up his new love of photography & digital art. Dave’s digital photography display at River Road Coffeehouse features locations around Granville, Ohio. Dave has lived in Boston, Massachusetts, and Columbus, Ohio. He is interested in themes ranging from lighthouses to churches. If it looks cool to him, he will consider using it. He now lives in Blacklick, Ohio, where he continues his love of art.

Shell Franklin is a small business owner, served in the military, is married to a writer, and is the father of two awesome “little” girls (age 20 and 22). He spends his days working with his hands (on his computer) creating art, writing, ranting and designing. According to Shell, “It is my goal to deliver a diverse experience into the art of our time and one individual’s mind. I try to engage a diverse audience in the powerful experience of artistic invention, using anything and everything as a catalyst for the creation of new works to inspire and challenge each person’s thoughts, using every medium from photography to the multitudes of computer media art forms of our age.” Shell’s current display at River Road Coffeehouse features pieces of his digital art.

A Note from Jo…

There is nothing more satisfying for me than using what I have learned about the world to let myself be moved to create harmonious fabric with nearly no planning. It’s a balancing point for the mystery of living, as we all do, picking through tangled balls of threads.

After 19 years, I am still fascinated by the way one bright thread can balance fabric that has dulled to mud color, or a deep color can anchor a piece too intense in its brightness. With a very active mind and training in verbal skills, it is therapy and education for me to silently spend hours seeing one thread at a time, selecting them in couples and trios, and building them deliberately for a harmonious fabric.

A wise critic once invited me to look at ancient mosaic tiles in Mediterranean ruins and temples. He was correct that I would find the building of mosaic tiles one at a time to be a wonderful containment for years of experimenting with how small things, carefully created, become part of vast and harmonious wholes.

Techniques:

I knitweave and needlefelt a tapestry base, and often embellish with gemstones and beads by crocheting and embroidering, or cutting a window to let in the light and the air. The best thing about these techniques is I can start quickly to capture an inspiration, and then adjust the results, like a painter would dab at a piece that isn’t quite finished… until it is. And that inspiration can be outdoors, in beloved spots like Dawes Arboretum or Lake Erie, since my techniques are highly portable.

I’m proud and grateful to be able to share this work with you, a patron of River Road Coffee, since we share a love of things carefully created and thoughtfully presented. I welcome questions by e-mail to my website, and invite co-creative custom projects. I can often be seen working on these pieces on the patio here, and at Makers Market on the southwest corner of the square, most Saturday mornings here in Granville.

In light and harmony,

Joanna (Jo) Ettorre

River Road Coffeehouse is introducing Stacey’s Space at River Road at its original Granville location starting February 15. Located in the Shops at Seven Pines on River Road adjacent to State Route 16, the “Fireplace Room” at the coffeehouse has long been used to feature the pottery of Heidi and Andy Casto, graduates of Ohio State and University of Iowa arts programs. With the Casto couple moving on to more decorative sculpture, Coffeehouse Managing Partner David Forman asked sister Stacey Forman to consider managing the shelf space on behalf of local artisans.

Stacey’s Space will feature selected displays of unique hand-crafted items for sale and not generally available in other retail locations. According to Stacey Forman, “The River Road Coffeehouse has long been a supporter of local artists and has displayed a variety of artwork on its walls. This is a way for us to branch out and feature items that are functional as well as unique and beautiful.” Forman hopes to incorporate items such as fiber wares, jewelry and home décor in with a small continuing display of Red Bridge Pottery as well as paper-back books brought to press by independent publisher Two Dollar Radio.

The local coffeehouse enjoys a significant amount of foot-traffic from locals as well as village visitors and David Forman notes that “the cozy and intimate atmosphere of the 1860’s farm house is an excellent environment for displaying and viewing artisan items.”

If you are a local artisan and are interested in displaying and selling your handmade goods at Stacey’s Space at River Road, please contact Stacey Forman at staceyforman@yahoo.com or at (614) 406-0668.

River Road Coffeehouse now features Stacey’s Space at River Road at its original Granville location. Located in the Shops at Seven Pines on River Road adjacent to State Route 16, the “Fireplace Room” at the coffeehouse is the perfect backdrop for local artisan wares. Coffeehouse Managing Partner David Forman recently asked sister Stacey Forman to consider managing the shelf space on behalf of local artisans.

Stacey’s Space features selected displays of unique hand-crafted items for sale and not generally available in other retail locations. According to Stacey Forman, “The River Road Coffeehouse has long been a supporter of local artists and has displayed a variety of artwork on its walls. This is a way for us to branch out and feature items that are functional as well as unique and beautiful.” Forman incorporates items such as fiber wares, jewelry and home décor with a small continuing display of Mom Dad Go Designs pottery as well as paper-back books brought to press by independent publisher Two Dollar Radio.

River Road Coffeehouse is proud to serve “Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream” in our Granville coffeehouse. We are one of only two independent coffeehouses in the state to initiate a partnership to serve Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream to our customers. This outstanding product is hand-made in nearby Columbus and the small family-owned and operated business has been the talk of the town since its founding in 2002. Jeni Britton Bauer and her husband Charly Bauer co-founded the company in 2002; Charly’s brother Tom Bauer became a partner one year later. Together with their small team, they make every batch of ice cream that is served in their four (soon to be five) stores in Columbus or shipped to doorsteps nationwide.

Jeni became inspired to make artisan ice creams while working at a French patisserie. Drawing on the practices of a traditional pastry kitchen, Jeni created her own techniques to make American ice creams that are less sweet and more flavorful.

Each batch of Jeni’s ice creams is carefully tended to; each flavor artfully achieved with fresh ingredients found in the Ohio countryside as well as responsibly-raised exotics from around the world. All of Jeni’s ice creams, sauces, pralines and marshmallows are handcrafted in Jeni’s production kitchen in Columbus, Ohio.

The goal of Jeni’s is to provide an unforgettable experience for its customers. Every member of the Jeni’s team is devoted to a singular mission: to create the finest ice creams with compelling ingredients and serve them with graciousness to every customer.

Flavors:

ICE CREAM:

Salty Caramel
Initial notes of burnt sugar give way to mouth-watering saltiness. A perfect salty sweet balance.

Gravel Road
Savory and smoky hits of almonds first, rounded out with salty notes for a satisfying finish.

Honey Vanilla Bean
Amazing cream flavor is lifted up and exalted by subtle hints of honey and vanilla.

Pistachio
Pure and true pistachio flavor; very lightly sweetened for a savory finish.

Thai Chili
Complex flavors of hot, salty, savory, and sweet melt to provide a satisfying treat. Spicy finish lingers.

Bourbon Buttered Pecan
Subtle corn mash notes come first, followed by rich and savory pecans; a charming hit of Bourbon finishes.

Dark Chocolate
Mouth-filling, palate-gripping, intense chocolate flavor with a fudge-like texture. Pleasingly dry finish.

Wildberry Lavender
Complex. Intense lavender with hints of exotic spices and lots of brambly berry flavors.

SORBET:

Riesling Poached Pear
A surprisingly rich sorbet; pure pear flavor with unique pear texture; sweet Riesling notes shine on the finish.

YOGURT:

Lemon Yogurt
Pure tart lemon, true tangy yogurt, perfectly balanced and not too sweet. Jeni’s favorite!

Seasonal Flavors:

ICE CREAM:

Brown Butter Almond Brittle
Based on the traditional Norwegian dessert krokan. Browned butter gives depth to salty, sweet almond brittle.

Savannah Buttermint
Salted butter softens cool mint while flecks of white chocolate add a playful crunch.

YOGURT:

Mango Lassi
Intense mango flavor with musky undertones; curiously rich and savory with cream and yogurt on the finish.

OHIO LOVE YOU IS THE WHOLE STORY …

PASTURE TO TABLE,

COW TO CONE.

Ohio Love You is everything Jeni’s is! —their inspirations … their ingredients … their relationships with devoted customers, talented farmers and a supportive community. It is a celebration of everything that makes Jeni’s ice creams truly splendid!

During the growing season, the Jeni’s kitchen reflects the flavors of the Ohio countryside. In summer, each day brings fresh strawberries bursting from flats, hundreds of Japanese cucumbers piled in crates, and bushels of heirloom melons bought at the Saturday market.

When a local farmer brings bags of fresh mint, their team washes and chops it before steeping it in cream. Apricots are peeled and sliced before they are pureed for a mid-summer yogurt.

And of course, all of their ice creams are made with Ohio dairy from pasture raised cows. No antibiotics, growth hormones, herbicides or pesticides necessary … cows eat grass, which their bodies were built to eat.

Our Community Partner Marketing Program offers a unique opportunity for locally owned businesses to display their company name, logo and product information on our coffee cup sleeves AND at the same time to provide a small counter-top display in our shop during the sleeve distribution period. Over 80% of customers use our coffee sleeves resulting in the generation of approximately 8,000 customer contacts each month. We have always used these sleeves exclusively to market our own stores… but now your business can share in this company awareness initiative. As a small, locally owned business, we know how difficult it is to compete effectively in today’s corporate-dominated retail and service environment. Our commitment to supporting the development of locally owned businesses is demonstrated in the basic elements of this program:

The Community Partner advertising opportunity is ONLY available to locally owned businesses that operate principally or exclusively in Licking County.

The program cost has been designed to “share” in the cost of the coffee cup sleeves.

Your business has the following options in utilizing this program:

Distribute cup sleeves at BOTH Granville & Newark Shops

Distribute cup sleeves at either Granville OR Newark Shop

Use sleeves for five consecutive weeks.

Cost= $450

Sleeve Count=10,000

Cost Per Contact=.045

Cost= $250

Sleeve Count=5,000

Cost Per Contact=.05

The sleeves are printed on white Kraft paper. The River Road Coffeehouse logo and store locations/phone numbers are printed on the reverse side of the sleeve where the seam and patent number are located. The Community Partner advertisement is located on the front of the sleeve and includes a print area of 3 and ¾ inches wide by 2 inches in height. The system can print one of four colors for each of the four ½ inch band zones (each band zone is ½ inch in heighth).

During the sleeve distribution period, your business may also furnish us a small counter-top display poster and brochures or coupons for distribution. This display will be located adjacent to our front counter and offers our “inside” customers an opportunity to obtain additional information about your business and its products or services.

To place your order or for further questions, please contact Mark Forman, Director for Community Relations at 740-403-8178 or e-mail mark@riverroadcoffeehouse.com

River Road Coffeehouse on 21st Street in Newark will host Kevin Dean Friday, January 29 from 7 to 8:30 PM.

Whether he’s exciting current fans with new material or silencing a noisy venue full of strangers, it is safe to say that singer-songwriter Kevin Dean makes an impact on every listener that he encounters. Trained in classical music from a young age, Kevin has spent the last few years applying his formal training to his passion for popular music at both Ohio State University and Berklee College of Music. The resulting sound has already caught the attention of listeners in cities such as Los Angeles, Boston and Nashville, as well as his hometown of Columbus.

His catchy melodies and recognizable voice are a perfect compliment to his pop-folk songwriting.
